The missiles were fired from areas around Hwangju country, in North Hwanghae province, towards the Sea of Japan, the Joint Chiefs said in a statement reported by CNN.
This comes just under two weeks after Pyongyang test-fired a submarine-launched ballistic missile. That missile entered Japan's air defense identification zone, the first time that has happened.
It also comes at a potentially embarrassing time for North Korea's only real ally, China, which is currently hosting the Group of Nations summit in Hangzhou.
At the G20, Chinese President Xi Jinping told his South Korean counterpart on Monday that Beijing opposes the deployment of the United States' THAAD missile defense system to South Korea.
"Mishandling the issue is not conducive to strategic stability in the region and could intensify disputes," Xi told Park Geun-hye.
The stated purpose of the THAAD system is to defend South Korea from missile attack from the North.

In a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in Tehran on Sunday, visiting Omani Interior Minister Hamoud bin Faisal Al Busaidi said the bilateral relations have reached a “premium level.”
He also voiced the sultanate of Oman’s readiness to enhance relations with Iran in all fields.
The Iranian minister, for his part, hailed Iran-Oman ties as a role model for the other countries.
Zarif also touched on the “historical juncture” in the regional developments, stressing that “constructive cooperation and mutual understanding should replace the illusion of rivalry.”
He further noted that instability and insecurity in any country will pose a threat to the other parts of the region and even to the world.
At the end of the meeting, the ministers signed an agreement on demarcation of sea borders between the two countries.

Trump sold the 45th floor of Trump World Tower to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for $4.5 million in June 2001, according to a city Finance Department spokeswoman. In 2008, the apartments became part of the Saudi Mission to the United Nations, records show.
The five apartments included 10 bedrooms and 13 bathrooms at the time of the sale, and had yearly common charges of $85,585 for building amenities, documents obtained by The Daily News show. Addressing the 11th Silk Road Mayors Forum in the Iranian city of Qazvin on Saturday, Velayati underlined that the Islamic Republic has no problem with the benefits that revival of the Silk Road will bring for China.
Silk Road revival will tu China into an economic power, which Iran approves of, though many other countries might oppose, he noted.
Velayati explained that China will need energy security to make more headways, saying that energy is supplied to China through Iran and Central Asia in full security.
He further made it clear that any plan for the Silk Road will include Iran as a major path, describing the Iranian southeaste port city of Chabahar as a leading juncture in that road that links land routes to the shipping lanes.
Iran and China have ramped up efforts in recent months to boost cooperation in various areas.

Turkish tanks crossed into Syria Saturday, allegedly to support Syrian rebels against the Daesh (ISIL) terror group, Anadolu news agency said.
Turkey launched a cross-border operation on Aug. 24 along with Free Syrian Army units in what Ankara claims is an attempt to clear the village of Jarablus of Daesh militants.
Since then, rebels have been seizing villages along the Turkish border near Jarablus and the weste Cobanbey district from Daesh.

SpaceX said there were no injuries and that an "anomaly" during the static fire test resulted in the loss of the rocket and a communications satellite owned by Israel-based Space Communication said to be going to be used by Facebook to expand inteet access in Africa.
Video showed a fiery blast ripping through the upper part of the rocket before the vehicle collapsed in flames on the launch pad at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station just after 9 a.m. EDT (1300 GMT). A plume of black smoke poured into the air.
The rocket's loss occurred while the first and second stages were being filled with propellant, the company said late on Thursday in a statement.
"Cause still unknown. More soon," Musk, a billionaire entrepreneur who helped found Tesla Motors, said on Twitter.

Bahram Qassemi was reacting to Idea by Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir who accused Tehran on Wednesday of “supplying weapons to Houthis” in Yemen and “destabilizing Arab countries”.
“Saudi authorities are bogged down in a bloody quagmire of terrorism and massacre of innocent women and children in Yemen, Syria and Iraq as a result of their egregious strategic errors”, Qassemi said on Thursday.

Speaking to reporters in Tehran on Wednesday, Seyed Hossein Mirshojaeean Hosseini said that during the first five months of the current Iranian year (which began on March 20), the administration has approved $7 billion as foreign investment, $1.6bln to $1.7bln of which has been absorbed.

“We are a couple of steps away from what I hope would be a ground-breaking deal on resolving the particular situation around Aleppo,” Ryabkov told the Tasnim News Agency on Wednesday.

The Izvestia newspaper said citing a source familiar with the recent consultations on Syrian settlement in the Swiss city of Geneva that the United States had sent Russia a package of proposals aimed at coordination between their air forces, Sputnik reported.
Izvestia added that Moscow made it clear for Washington that Russian Aerospace Forces were not involved in aerial operation over Aleppo and the United States should be engaged in a dialogue on the issue with Syria itself. The media outlet added that Russia had no objections to coordination of its efforts with the United States, but only at a distance of several dozens of miles around Aleppo.

Police conducted operations in Istanbul, Ankara and Izmit based on new evidence in the investigation.
